One startup is focused on making birth control more accessible to women whether or not Obamacare is repealed. The company, Nurx, is giving away free birth control to new users and taking a stance against the Trump’s Administration’s recent attacks to birth control access. For the month of August, Nurx is offering new users up to two months of free birth control just by using the promo code “ACA LIVES” at checkout.
On October 6th, it was announced that President Trump would roll back the birth control mandate. Now employers and insurers are allowed to refuse to provide coverage for birth control if they have a “religious or moral objection”. This is a move that could potentially affect millions of women.
Under the ACA, health plans are required to cover at least one form of the 18 FDA-approved contraceptives. This coverage provides birth control to women without any outside costs and repealing Obamacare and removing this mandate would once again, force women to pay more for their reproductive care.
With the company’s birth control app, women can have their birth control prescribed and delivered to their door. Users of the app fill out a health form, which is then reviewed by a doctor, who then writes a prescription and has a pharmacy send the medication to the user. Users can use their insurance to cover the cost of their prescription or pay out-of-pocket, and the delivery is always free.
Protecting women’s ability to access birth control is more important than ever. Women should never have to compromise their health, and Nurx is making sure they don’t have to. According to a press release, even if the ACA is repealed, the company intends to continue to serve as a low-cost option for women and continue to deliver birth control for free. And that’s the way it should be.
